Consular protection refers to the act of a country's consular authorities or officials, within the limits permitted by international law, protecting the rights and interests of the sending country and its nationals in accordance with their national interests and foreign policies. Generally, four principles are followed, namely: nationality principle, legality principle, limitation principle, and voluntariness principle.
